Why Convert HEIC to PNG?
Opens without an add-on
Windows and Android usually need a codec installed before they will show a HEIC at all. A PNG opens in everything already on the machine.
Lossless from here on
HEIC re-encodes every time it is saved. Once the photo is a PNG, editing and re-saving it costs nothing further, which is the reason to pick PNG over JPG here.
Transparency survives
Both formats carry an alpha channel, but PNG is the one image editors and design tools will actually accept it from.
The cost is about 17x the size
Lossless means storing every pixel of a photo HEIC had already compressed, without recovering anything it discarded. If you only need the picture to open anywhere, HEIC to JPG or HEIC to WebP is a fraction of the size.
HEIC vs PNG, measured
PNG is lossless, which sounds like the safe choice and is why most people reach for it. Worth knowing what lossless actually buys you here: PNG faithfully preserves the image HEIC already compressed, at about seventeen times the size, without recovering any of the detail HEIC threw away. It is the right target for editing and for transparency, and an expensive one for storage.
| Measure | HEIC | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| File size, same photo | 702 KB | 11,913 KB |
| Size change on conversion | -- | about 17x larger |
| Compression | Lossy | Lossless |
| Restores detail HEIC discarded | -- | No |
| Survives repeated re-saving | No | Yes |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Opens on Windows and Android | Often needs an add-on | Always |
HEIC encoded via macOS sips at quality 80. Measured on one 3840 x 2160 (8.3 MP) photograph, decoded once and then encoded into each format from that same master, so neither format inherits the other's compression artifacts. Your own files will land on different numbers; the direction and rough scale of the gap is what carries over. Pick PNG when you need to edit, re-save or keep transparency. If you only need the picture to open anywhere, JPG is a fraction of the size.
Questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It produces smaller files than JPG but isn't universally supported.
Is the conversion free?
Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks. Up to 20 files per day, shared across converting and compressing.
Are my files safe?
Files are processed in server memory and immediately discarded. Nothing is stored on disk or logged.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes. Add up to 10 files per batch. They are processed one at a time and you can download them individually or together as a ZIP.
Does it work on Windows and Android?
Yes. SwiftConverter runs in any modern browser on any device.
This one comes to our server
A browser cannot do this one, so the file is uploaded, held in memory, converted, returned and discarded. Nothing is written to disk and there is no account to attach it to.
