Why Convert WebP to PNG?

Transparency survives

Both formats carry an alpha channel, so a cut-out logo or icon stays cut out. Converting to JPG would flatten it to white.

Editor compatibility

Every image editor, from Preview and Paint to Figma and Illustrator, imports PNG without a plugin.

Lossless from here on

PNG stores exactly what it is given, so further edits and re-saves add no new compression damage.

Local conversion

Your browser already decodes WebP, so this runs on your device with no upload and no daily limit.

WebP vs PNG, measured

Converting a lossy WebP to PNG does not undo the compression already applied; it preserves the compressed result losslessly from here on. That is genuinely useful before editing, and expensive as a storage format: the same photograph grows about twelvefold.

Source WEBP written at quality 92. Measured on one 3840 x 2160 (8.3 MP) photograph, decoded once and then encoded into each format from that same master, so neither format inherits the other's compression artifacts. Your own files will land on different numbers; the direction and rough scale of the gap is what carries over. If the WebP was lossless to begin with, the conversion is fully reversible and only the file size changes.

Questions

Does converting to PNG restore quality the WebP lost?

No. Most WebP files on the web are lossy, and that detail is gone for good. PNG preserves what remains and prevents any further loss.

Will the PNG be bigger?

Usually yes, often several times bigger for photos. For flat graphics, logos and screenshots the difference is much smaller.

Is transparency really preserved?

Yes. The alpha channel is carried through to the PNG unchanged.

Is anything uploaded?

No. WebP to PNG is handled entirely in your browser and does not count toward the 20 per day server limit.

This one never leaves your device

Your browser does this conversion itself, with no upload and nothing counted against the daily limit. Close the tab mid-way and the file was never anywhere but your machine.
