The short version

Keep your original. Conversion is lossy by nature, the figures we publish are measurements rather than promises, and a returned file can be wrong.

Output is not guaranteed

Every format trades something away, so a converted file is a new file and not a copy. Colour profiles, fonts, metadata, transparency and layout can all shift, and some of those losses are silent. The one we measured and wrote up is a Word document going to PDF: the PDF prints whatever the document is currently displaying, so tracked changes and comments go in unless you resolve them first. Check anything that matters before you rely on it.

About the numbers we publish

The comparison tables and the blog carry figures we produced ourselves rather than quoted. Read them for what they are:

  • They come from our own test corpus. Your files are not our files, and a different photo, screenshot or document will land somewhere else on the scale.
  • They were produced by specific versions of the libraries behind the tool. A later version can encode the same image differently.
  • The method is stated beside each table, so a figure you doubt can be checked against the same steps rather than taken on trust.
  • A figure is a measurement, never a service level. Nothing on this site promises your file will compress by the amount a table shows.

Where an article did not measure something, it says so in its closing section instead of implying a number it does not have.

Features can be unavailable

Two conversions depend on engines installed alongside the app rather than shipped with it: Word documents to PDF, and an animated SVG keeping its motion in a GIF. When one of those is missing on the server the site says so on the spot, and an animated SVG falls back to a single still frame rather than failing. We do not guarantee uptime or that any individual feature is running at the moment you need it.

No professional advice

The articles here explain image formats, compression and document conversion. They are technical writing, not legal, financial, medical or professional advice, and they are not a substitute for archival or forensic tooling. Do not use a converted file as a document of record without checking it against the original.

Advertising

This site carries advertising served by Google, which uses cookies to select what it shows. We do not choose the individual adverts, we do not endorse the products in them, and a transaction you enter into with an advertiser is between you and them. What the adverts are allowed to know about you, and how to withdraw consent, is set out on the privacy policy.

Links out

We link to specifications, standards documents and tools other people maintain where they help. We do not control those pages and are not responsible for what they say or do after we link to them.

How this sits with the Terms

This page explains the limits in plain language. The binding version, including the limitation of liability, is the terms of service, and where the two differ the terms govern.
